Progress Lifeline – Working to become Dementia Friendly in 2018

With South Ribble recently being named a Dementia-friendly community by the Alzheimer’s Society, staff from Progress Lifeline, a service based in South Ribble and providing personal pendant alarms, telecare and emergency home response across Lancashire, have taken part in a Dementia Friends session, led by Dementia Friends Champion Sue Turley from Home Instead Senior Care (Preston and South Ribble)

The hour-long Dementia Friends training session aims to change the negative perceptions of Dementia, remove the fear and stigma associated with the disease and enable Progress Lifeline employees to turn their understanding of Dementia into practical actions to support people living with Dementia.

At the end of the session, Sue presented Progress Lifeline staff with the South Ribble Dementia Charter, committing Progress Lifeline to support those in our community who live with Dementia.

Quality and Training Co-ordinator at Progress Lifeline, Mandy Helmn, who organised the session, said:

With so many of our Progress Lifeline personal alarm customers living with Dementia, Progress Lifeline is committed and dedicated to providing the best quality service to our customers. This includes having staff who are caring and compassionate, with an understanding of what living with Dementia is like for our customers and their families. Progress Lifeline are proud to make the commitment that all Progress Lifeline staff will undertake Dementia Friends training, so that customers can be confident that when they are choosing Progress Lifeline for their personal pendant alarm service, they will receive a Dementia-friendly service. This was the second Dementia Friends session provided for Progress Lifeline staff and included attendees from the Progress Lifeline Installation and Emergency Home Response teams, control centre operators and administration team staff members who are all in customer-facing roles at Progress Lifeline.

Feedback from the attendees included:

“The Dementia Friends training made me think about how we can change the way we listen, communicate and react to people to make them more comfortable and put them at ease.”

“It was really powerful to hear everyone’s personal stories about how they have been affected by Dementia and I now have a better understanding about how Dementia affects a person’s memory, remembering also that their feelings and emotions are still there.”

“I’m now proud to say that I’m a Dementia Friend and I’m looking forward to putting small changes into place when communicating with Progress Lifeline customers.”

The South Ribble Dementia Charter means that Progress Lifeline now undertake to ensure that:
  • Members of our organisation become Dementia Friends
  • When we consider new policies or strategies, we will make sure people living with Dementia are considered
  • Our place of business/work is friendly and welcoming and we consider the way it is designed/looks to help people with Dementia have a positive experience.
  • Any events we hold, we make sure we consider the needs of people living with Dementia so that they are able to fully participate in community life.Dem Friends 1
