Telecare for people with a learning disability
More and more people with a learning disability are being empowered to have more choice and control over their lives.
There are an increasing number of ways that housing and support can be provided to help people with a learning disability gain their independence.
At Progress Lifeline we tailor packages that give people the support and confidence they need to live in their own home.
We understand the risks and challenges that people with a learning difficulty might face on a day-to-day basis and the concerns as guardians or carers that you might have about their safety and wellbeing.
Our sensors can detect situations that may be dangerous or uncomfortable, alerting our control centre so they can trigger an appropriate response. A potential package for supporting people with a learning difficulty could include the following sensors and services:
When smoke or fire is detected an alarm will automatically be sounded in the home. Our control centre will also be notified and if necessary the operator will contact the emergency services.
Carbon monoxide alarms
Carbon monoxide is an odourless and colourless gas which is sometimes produced in fires and boilers and can be fatal. Our carbon monoxide alarms tell us when there are dangerous levels in your home.
Property exit sensors
Property exit sensors tell us if you have left your home and not returned for a prolonged period of time. They are useful for people who are often disorientated. They can also tell us if you have accidentally left your door open.
Bed and chair occupancy sensors
If you have been out of your bed or chair for a long time then the occupancy sensor will let us know. They are useful for people who are at risk of falls or easily get disorientated. The sensor can also be connected to a light so that it is switched on and off as you get in and out of bed.
Flood detectors tell us when taps have not been switched off. They are particularly useful for people who can be forgetful and can prevent injury and costly damage.
These detect both extreme heat and cold. They can tell us if there is a fire in your house or if your house is too cold because of bad weather, a broken boiler or a door that has been left open.
Forgetting to light the gas on a hob or fire a big fire hazard. Our gas detectors automatically shut off the gas when the detector senses high levels of it in the air.
Bogus caller alarm
This helps vulnerable people who are often targeted by criminals and bogus callers by connecting the intercom to the control centre. The control centre can intervene if they feel the caller is being overly aggressive or trying to exploit the Progress Lifeline customer.
Medication reminder prompts
The medication unit only dispenses medication at set times and lets us know if you have forgotten to take it. They are also beneficial for people who have to take medication at different times during the day.
The sensors can be linked to our 24 hour control centre or a nominated person. If a problem occurs, this triggers the alarm to our control centre, a relative or key holder. Some of our sensors even remotely control appliances and can switch off gas and taps if they detect that something is wrong; preventing a dangerous situation.
We can provide the service in any home regardless of the size, layout or location of the property – all that is needed is a connected landline telephone.
The cost for our starter package is £3.60 per week. This includes:
- The Progress Lifeline unit
- Personal alarm pendant or wristband
- Complete maintenance and servicing of the equipment
- 24 hour monitoring and regular assessments.
More enhanced packages are available from £5.00 per week and include the starter package plus a choice of sensors from our range.
There is a one-off installation charge of £20 for the service and up to £40 depending on the package you choose.
The service may be available for free or at a reduced cost for those people in receipt of certain benefits.
